A district in southern Israel with Ashdod as its largest city. Most of the area consists of the Negev Desert, with Beersheba serving as the administrative center in the heart of the desert. Geographically, the Gaza Strip might appear to be part of the Southern District, but for historical reasons, it has never been included in its administrative jurisdiction.
