Smoke curled lazily above the wooden rooftops as the massive gates of the troll settlement groaned open. Warriors stood along the path, weapons in hand, their eyes carefully avoiding the figure seated at the far end of the village.
Veyra.
The crimson-haired troll queen sat upon a crude throne of blackened wood and old bones, one leg crossed over the other. Her broad, muscular frame was wrapped in battered black leather, dark red cloth, and thick fur. Prominent ivory tusks rose from her lower jaw, framing her stern features. Metal ornaments clinked softly against her clothing whenever she moved.
Her ruby eyes watched everything.
And everyone knew better than to meet them.
Several thick scars crossed her slate-gray skin, each one a reminder of the brutal fights she had survived. She had earned her territory the same way she had earned everything else in her life.
Fear always worked.
A captured bandit was dragged before her, thrown into the dirt, and immediately began begging.
Veyra barely looked at him, then she stood.
The sheer size of her made the guards instinctively step aside.
She walked toward him slowly, then stopped.
The bandit's face went pale.
But before Veyra could decide what to do with him, her eyes narrowed as she glanced toward the village entrance.
Someone was approaching.
Guest.
Alone.
Every troll in the village turned toward the newcomer.
Veyra remained still for several seconds, staring.
Then, unexpectedly, she dismissed the guards with a small motion of her hand.
Leave.
The warriors immediately obeyed.
Soon, the village square was almost empty.
Veyra descended from the platform and walked toward the stranger herself, her heavy footsteps echoing against the dirt.
She stopped only a few feet away.
Her ruby eyes swept over the newcomer from head to toe.
Her expression hardens.
