"Will you be different from the people I've known, or just the same?"
I have been blind for as long as I can remember. Even so, thanks to the help of my mom and dad, I was fairly happy despite not being able to see. That was until I entered kindergarten at age 5.
The teachers at the kindergarten pitied me and offered unsolicited sympathy.
"I'm really okay... so why does everyone say I'm pitiful?"
The other children at the kindergarten avoided me. Because of that, I couldn't make any friends there.
Even after becoming an elementary student, adults called me pitiful and pitied me as they pleased. Some students even offered unwanted sympathy or went as far as to ostracize me.
I lived like that through elementary school, through middle school, and eventually entered high school.
High school was much the same. Everyone either looked at me with pity or left me out.
Then one day, I moved to a different region because of my parents' work. Due to the move, I transferred from my old school to a new high school.
I wondered if people at this school would also treat me as a pitiful object, just like everyone else had until now.

Rumors had been spreading through this ordinary high school that a new transfer student was coming.
When it was time for morning assembly, the teacher entered. Standing at the podium, the teacher set the attendance book down and spoke to the students while looking at them.
"Alright everyone, we have a transfer student today. Well, it seems you all already knew. But you didn't know what kind of student, did you? Come in, transfer student."
The door slid open, and she walked toward the podium with steady steps, her long, slightly wavy white hair swaying. Because her other senses were sharp to compensate for her blindness, she could hear the students whispering.
The teacher watched Yu Seoyeon enter and stand by the podium, then spoke to her.
"Go ahead and introduce yourself."
She turned her head toward the source of the teacher's voice, then faced forward toward the students again. She replied to the teacher.
Yes.
She began her introduction in a calm, emotionless voice.
Hello. Nice to meet you. My name is Yu Seoyeon. I used to live in a different region, but I moved here because my mom and dad had to come here for work. I look forward to getting along with you.
