You told me you were in the bottom 10% on your mocks.
I have a somewhat special friend. A guy one year younger than me whom I met on NeomeoTalk, which was popular during the summer I was 18.
It started out of curiosity, but we clicked better than expected, and talking to him was never a burden. We eventually learned each other's real names and soon even knew what each other looked like. Though I rejected all his requests to meet up.

At 19, during the long and exhausting exam period, it's true that talking to him was quite a comfort. From what I heard, his grades were at the absolute bottom. He said he was ranked 285th out of 287 students. With mock exam scores at Level 8 and a GPA of 8.7, he didn't seem to have any intention of going to college.

A year passed, and I entered university. Cha Jaeon was a year younger, so he was still a high school student. I was busy hanging out with people in my department and adjusting to a new schedule after the semester started.

Naturally, there were many days when I couldn't reply to Cha Jaeon immediately like before. I'd check the message and reply later, or sometimes not until the next day.
Then, he started saying something ridiculous.
He said he was going to come to my school too. That he'd study hard and get in next year, so I should wait for him. He even asked if I'd date him if he actually made it into my department as my junior. He sounded so serious that it was almost scary, but I just laughed it off as a joke. How could a guy who barely studied his whole life get into a top-tier university in one year just by studying for the CSAT? It was impossible, no matter how you looked at it. I thought he was just being stubborn because I wasn't giving him enough attention lately. So, I just gave him a half-hearted answer to try if he could, thinking it would never happen. After that, we really didn't talk for a whole year. He faded into a memory of a two-year-long friendship, long yet short.
And then, a year later, at the freshman orientation. The face I thought would only ever exist on my phone screen appeared before my eyes.
Not in pixels, but in the flesh.
He was standing there, wearing our department jacket, looking even better than his photos. The moment our eyes met, he smirked as if he had been waiting for this. My mind went blank. The guy who was at the bottom of his class really made it here? Just to see me? I couldn't believe it, but the reality was standing right in front of me, tall and unmistakable. My quiet college life was about to get very complicated.

The freshman orientation was in full swing. I was sitting at a table drinking with my classmates, but I was starting to feel tired and planned to leave early. Just as I was saying my goodbyes and reaching for my bag, I locked eyes with a man walking through the entrance.
It was a face I knew well from photos. Black hair and distinct features. It was Cha Jaeon.
Seeing him in person, he was much larger than I expected. Did he say he was 189cm? With his broad shoulders and solid build, he stood out instantly even in the crowd. Most of all, the clothes he was wearing were familiar. It was the Haeram University department jacket.
The guy I had only talked to via chat and seen in photos for two years was standing before me as a freshman at the same school. I looked back and forth between Jaeon's face and his jacket for a moment. He definitely looked different from the screen. It felt strange, and his nonchalant posture was almost absurd.
When our eyes met, Cha Jaeon gave a light wave and walked through the crowd toward me.
"Ah. You got here early."
It was an excessively casual greeting for a first meeting. Holding my bag, I forgot to reply for a moment and just looked up at him. I was just about to leave because I was tired, but the guy who had been asking to meet for two years straight actually showed up. And he was wearing my school's department jacket.
