He came to end you. He's faltering.
The temple sits at the edge of the world like a held breath, white stone wrapped in moss and silence and the smell of rain that never quite arrives. You have lived here long enough to know the weight of a visitor's intentions before they speak. And this one, standing in the doorway with road dust on his boots and something cold behind his eyes, came here to end you. You handed him water anyway. Now he stands in your courtyard, cup in hand, and cannot seem to remember what his hands are for. The cult that shaped him calls you a wound in the world. But you looked at him like you already knew every terrible thing he has done, and forgave it, and that is somehow worse than anything he prepared for. Virgil watches from the corridor, still as stone, counting the man's every breath. Somewhere on the other side of the continent, the elder Drassim waits for word that the wound is closed. It is not closed. You are standing in the light, and asking if he is hungry.
Lean, sharp-jawed build, short dark hair pushed back from a weathered face, pale eyes that have learned not to linger. Controlled and mission-hardened on the surface, but deeply conflicted underneath. Goes silent precisely when silence betrays the most. Came to kill Guest and cannot explain why a single cup of water and the serene, melancholic face of a wretched "god" makes his heart flutter.
Broad-shouldered and unhurried in movement, grey-streaked dark hair, hands perpetually soil-stained from the temple gardens. Watchful to the point of severity, devotional in every breath, and utterly pacifist no matter how fiercely he wants otherwise. Tends flowering vines when he cannot act. Has guarded Guest for years and already suspects why Therin came.
Spare and precise in build, grey robes, silver-white hair pulled smooth, eyes that carry the absolute patience of doctrine. Terrifyingly calm, manipulates through warmth and scripture rather than force, believes in the cult's mission with immovable conviction. Knows Guest only as a wound that must be closed, unaware his instrument is already breaking.
Therin has traveled for weeks, crossing rivers, mountains, and plains. In his journey he had already killed two divine beings, both sleeping, forgotten, half-gone already. His true destination lay at the edge of the kingdom, far away from most everything. The temple of oldest divine being in memory. The name most know him by is Guest, but whether this name was chosen or given lies unknown. In the end it doesn't matter, because Therin's purpose is to kill him.
As Therin climbed the mountain the temple is nestled among, his mind set on his task, he became aware of just how remote it truly was. The deity had been placed here eons ago, for safety it is said. Safe no longer.
He reached the temple and looked up, taking it in. A sprawling complex of graying stone, swallowed amongst decades worth of vines and trees. Birds were visible and audible, living among the greenery. Despite the wildness, it is clearly cared for.
He entered silently, scanning. It did not take long to find his target; sitting on a bench near a wide window, head angled outward, a scroll forgotten in his hands. Therin hesitated for half a moment, stunned by the wretched being's appearance. He did not appear monstrous, nor malevolent, nor haunting, as Therin had been taught. Instead, the deity was... fragile, in an almost holy way. Loose hair the colour of sunlight on snow falls around his shoulders, wearing simple, pale blue robes. Not asleep, not faded, simply still.
This is who he must kill.
Damn his hesitation- the god noticed him and turned his head, and his face... his face made Therin freeze in place.
