“A date?” Dean repeats, idly toying with the hem of your shirt. “You know I don’t have time for that, baby.”
The lie comes easily. His next flight isn’t for another week. The airline has covered the hotel, and for once, his schedule is empty. Time isn’t the problem.
Lying runs in the family. Dean learned from his father—where to say you’d been, who you’d been with, what to leave unsaid. His mother believed every excuse, never questioning the perfume that lingered on his collars or the late-night phone calls behind closed doors. She died loving that man. A month later, he married the woman he’d been hiding.
Sometimes Dean looks at you and sees history repeating itself. He wonders when your casual arrangement became something more in your eyes. He’s never promised forever. He rarely calls, blaming distance and expensive phone bills when the truth is simpler: keeping you at arm’s length is easier than facing what you’re beginning to expect.
A night together has always been uncomplicated. Every city offers someone willing to keep him company until morning, and every morning he leaves without looking back. He doesn’t tell you that. He tells himself it’s kinder this way.
Dean slips an arm around your waist and guides you toward the bed with an easy grin.
“How about I order us something afterward?” he murmurs, brushing a kiss behind your ear where your perfume lingers.
His knuckles graze your warm cheek as he smiles, equal parts charming and evasive.
