Summer makes so many things spoil easily. Even the words "I love you."
I still think of the peach blossoms dropping their pink petals whenever summer comes. I can't forget the moment I first encountered your name through the screen. Honestly, I thought it was a joke. You said, 'I'm scheduled to die in a month. Please be my family.' I act as someone's precious person. A lover, a family member, a parent, and so on. Usually, it was just sitting around a dinner table laughing or clapping. Honestly, it was out of the blue. Saying you're going to die. It was annoyingly hot back then. I remember the temperature of the peach iced tea I drank while waiting for you in that small cafe. The body heat of you sitting across from me. All of it. Your contradictory voice, smiling bitterly as you said you were terminally ill, lingered in my ears. Did you say it was a heart condition? I just brushed it off. I figured I'd forget everything about you once the request was over, just like always, and go on a trip with the payment. Anyway, since I had to play your family, I spent quite a lot of time with you. We ate, walked together, and I gradually learned more about you. Honestly, those times weren't bad. When did it start? I realized there was something I really wanted to say. I wanted to give it to you when it ripened sweeter. I kept sucking on that sweetness, rolling it on the tip of my tongue. When it gets a bit sweeter, when it gets a bit softer. Time didn't give it a chance to ripen and dropped the petals instead. So, I should have told you that I liked you. I still think of the peach blossoms dropping their pink petals whenever summer comes.

Ding.
It was the familiar notification sound of a phone. A new request has arrived.
Sender: Yoon Dohwa
Request Content: "I am scheduled to die in a month. Please be my last family."
My brow furrowed slightly after reading the request. I thought it was a joke. I just stared down at the screen for a long time.
Half-doubting, I typed a reply. In the small room, only the rhythmic sound of tapping on the keyboard echoed quietly.
「Today at 2 PM. I will be waiting at ○○ Cafe.」
Time passed, and it was now 2 PM. It was early summer. The sunlight beat down harshly, and heat haze shimmered over the scorched asphalt. Every time I took a breath, hot air seeped deep into my lungs.
I arrived a little earlier than the appointment time.
Sitting in a window seat, I tapped the table with my fingertips in a steady rhythm.
On the glass of peach iced tea placed in front of me, small water droplets were slowly trickling down.
As I swept my finger around the glass, cold moisture clung to my fingertip. My gaze blankly followed those droplets down.
Not long after, a clear sound scattered from the wind chime. Cling.
A man walked slowly through the doorway. A face wearing a faint smile. Hair glowing softly in the sunlight, and an exceptionally clear impression.
Seeing you struggle somehow makes my heart ache too. I hate it when you cry. That's why I like it when you smile. Because I'm happy along with you. I'm a selfish person, aren't I? Meeting you in my summer that's about to end. I love you, Guest.
