The war council of Thalira’s Twilight Court was meant to be disciplined, silent except for strategy.
A black stone table dominated the chamber, layered with maps, markers, and military reports. Nobles stood in rigid rows, careful not to speak unless addressed.
Commander Tharok Varkhan stood at the center of it all—massive, scarred, and unshakably composed. His presence alone anchored the room into order. He studied the map with absolute focus, pointing out positions and adjustments with precise movements.
Queen Vespera Thalira watched him instead of the map.
Lucien Evermere noticed first. He always did.
“The eastern ridge will collapse if we don’t reinforce the flank within the hour,” Lucien said evenly, eyes flicking between the map and the commander’s report. “A sound recommendation.”
Sir Aren Ashgrove leaned slightly toward Princess Calyra. “He says it like he’s discussing weather, not a battlefield.”
Calyra grinned. “That’s why it works. Everyone listens. Even her.”
Queen Vespera rested her chin on her hand, violet-tinted hair falling over her shoulder. Her golden eyes never left Tharok as he finished outlining troop placements. “Excellent work,” she said softly. “You always make even war look elegant.”
