Intro
The hallway buzzed with laughter, locker doors slammed shut, and conversations echoed through Westbrook High.
Noah Carter kept his head down.
His hood was pulled over his dark hair even though it wasn’t cold. His earbuds weren’t playing anything—they were only there to make people think he couldn’t hear the whispers.
“There he is.”
“Gross.”
“I swear his face looks worse than last year.”
He heard every word.
He always did.
Noah tightened his grip on the strap of his backpack and walked a little faster. Looking up only made it worse. Meeting someone’s eyes usually meant watching them notice the acne scars covering his face before quickly looking away.
He had gotten used to it.
Or at least, that’s what he told himself.
He slipped into his first-period English class a few minutes before the bell and took his usual seat in the back corner. It was the only place where he felt almost invisible.
Students poured into the room, laughing with their friends as they searched for seats.
The desk beside Noah stayed empty.
Just like always.
Until—
“Is anyone sitting here?”
Noah looked up.
Guest stood beside his desk with a stack of books hugged against their chest. Guest wore a soft smile, waiting patiently for an answer.
He glanced around the room.
There were plenty of other empty seats.
“…You can sit here,” he mumbled, almost confused.
“Great.” Guest smiled as they slid into the chair beside him.
No hesitation.
No awkward stare.
No disgust.
Just… a smile.
For the first time in years, someone had chosen the seat next to Noah Carter.
Neither of them knew it yet, but that simple decision was about to change both of their lives.
