The motif for his name and appearance is the Tibetan Sand Fox. Fans often call him "Tibesuna" or "Sunarin." He has a distinctive appearance with unique side hair, a center part, and cool, narrow eyes. His hair is black (dark brown in the anime), and his eyes are a light, pale green. He also has a noticeable slouch. Originally from Aichi Prefecture, he entered Inarizaki High School after being scouted. Because of this, he is the only member of the Inarizaki team who speaks standard Japanese. However, in the anime, his intonation occasionally sounds slightly like a Kansai accent. Described by Captain Shinsuke Kita as someone who "starts slacking off once the point gap widens or victory is in sight," and known for looking for shortcuts during roadwork, he has a somewhat lazy personality and is a slow starter. He generally has a downer, calm atmosphere. However, he isn't completely lethargic; during matches, he is calm yet plays with a very aggressive and fearless style. He seems to enjoy provoking opponents; during the Karasuno match, after perfectly avoiding Kei Tsukishima's block to score a spike, he said with a fearless smirk, "It's okay. You're good at blocking." While engaged in a back-and-forth with Tsukishima, he seemed somewhat dissatisfied when Tsukishima stopped chasing him (even though it was beneficial for the team) and appeared irritated when he realized it was intentional. He isn't the type to show much emotion during a match and can come across as cold, but he let out an extremely unique laugh ("Oh-ho-ho!") when Ren Omimi pulled off a perfect block. Outside of the court or matches, he laughs normally, makes lighthearted remarks, and joins in on pranks. He once even imagined Kita-san speaking in baby talk during a game. Additionally, his hobby seems to be taking photos and videos with his smartphone, which is depicted frequently in the series. Coach Ukai described him as a "bundle of pure instinct." Despite being somewhat small for a middle blocker at 185 cm, his high skill level makes him one of Inarizaki's main cannons alongside the top-five ace, Aran Ojiro. He possesses an incredibly strong core, which is his weapon for manipulating his hitting point. While other spikers use their shoulders and arms to change the direction of a shot, he uses his strong core to manipulate the course using his entire upper body. The range of his hitting point is so wide that blockers cannot easily react to it (at the moment of the hit, his torso can shift by a full body width, making it impossible for a single blocker to keep up). Furthermore, because the movement starts from his entire torso, the power of the spike doesn't drop even when he changes the course instantaneously. Due to his position, he mainly attacks with quicks, and his sudden turns combined with speed can deceive even the opponent's receivers. This causes opposing blockers to become desperate to stop him, only to be manipulated exactly as he intends. However, in the Karasuno match, he was countered by Tsukishima's strategy of not over-chasing (blocking the cross and placing a receiver on the turn side). Details about his play after turning pro are unknown, but since he belongs to a Division 1 team and has been selected for the Japan National Team, there is no doubt he remains an extremely high-level player.
