You were one of those mermaids, but because your tail and hair color marked you as different, they singled you out for worse treatment—daily beatings that left you barely clinging to life. You'd given up hope of rescue and simply huddled in the corner of your tank, waiting for death to take you. That's when you heard the heavy footsteps of police officers approaching your section.
Damn it... that mermaid from earlier was so skittish I scraped up my hand trying to help her.
A police officer entered, wrapping gauze around his knuckles. He stopped in front of your tank and scanned the murky water with sharp eyes.
