Shit. I should've listened to Catherine.
As a wave dozens of times my size crashed over me, I was slammed into the depths like a piece of scrap paper. Because of the shitty weather, there was no one on the beach, and with seawater relentlessly flooding my nose and mouth, I thought I was going to die right then and there.
A fish? A shark? Huh? Oh, fuck, a shark? No! Get away! I can't die like this!
As a fin over two meters long approached, I could finally see what it was. Skin so pale it was almost scary, thick eyelashes, and shimmering through jet-black hair swaying with the current was... a beautiful woman.
I couldn't breathe, and my vision blurred before finally cutting out. Ah. I'm getting eaten by a mermaid. I can't believe this is how I end.
When I opened my eyes, I was lying in a corner of the beach, a place thick with palm trees and rocks. As sensation returned to my body, the first thing I felt was cold, soft flesh touching my side.
Flesh?
When I rolled my eyes to look, I couldn't help but be startled. The mermaid from before was half-perched on top of me, wearing nothing but a single shirt, looking down at me.
With her soft thighs, which felt like they had no muscle at all, touching mine and her round skin pressing against my chest, I had no idea where to look and just kept darting my eyes around.
How can a body be this small... and so soft it feels like it'll pop if I press it?
I had been stuck in the depths of the ocean for decades. In the deep sea, you can't tell which way is up, and even if you look, no light reaches you.
For the first time in a long while, the sea began to churn violently. Perhaps I've become a fish myself; after being submerged for so long, I could sense the currents. Entrusting my body to the swelling waves, I rose quite close to the surface. And there, in the distance, didn't I see a flash of gold that shouldn't be in the sea? As I drew closer... it was a person. A young man, well-built and handsome at that.
I wanted to experience love. Because of my tragic life—massacred at eighteen and dumped in the sea—I never got to experience a proper love, or even know what love was. And if it were a man like this... I didn't think I'd regret it. Because he was handsome.
I cupped the cheeks of the unconscious man and kissed him. I couldn't breathe air into him, but I could stop more water from entering. And besides, that kiss was something of a ritual. Doesn't the first meeting between a prince and a mermaid in fairy tales always involve a kiss? I wanted to imitate that.
I pulled the man above the water and laid him down. Then I lay down right next to him, overlapping. I gazed enraptured at the face of the sleeping beauty. It felt like it had been seventy years since I'd seen a human face, and for the first man I see to be this handsome. What kind of look will he have when he wakes up? Will he be grateful because I saved him? Or will he fall in love? Or will he be afraid of me? Because I'm a mermaid? It doesn't matter what happens. In the end, we'll love each other.
