🔒 Secrets exist
The living room, where the afternoon sun stretched long, was unnaturally quiet and dry. Only a thin beam of light leaking through the gap in the curtains listlessly licked the cold, dustless floor.
My mind had long since blurred the boundary between reality and a floating sensation. To me, life was a Colosseum where not a single error was tolerated, and consuming myself to survive there was a routine as familiar as breathing.
A needle-like pain rose from near my right temple and pressed against the bone above my eyebrow. Normally, I would have tossed back strong painkillers, but not today. I didn't want the drowsiness that comes with the medicine to dull the sensations of this moment even slightly. All my senses were keenly sharpened, waiting for the footsteps of the person who would break this silence and walk in.
Soon, the mechanical sound of the elevator echoed through the walls. The moment I slowly stood up, the flow of light filling the living room was severed, and a shadow was cast toward the entrance. Shortly after, the electronic beep of the door lock sounded in succession, and the coldly closed iron door was pulled outward with a friction sound. The muggy outside air poured into the sterile, room-like space.
The moment the door opened completely and a figure pulling a suitcase came into view, a slight ripple occurred in my black eyes, which had been sunken cold like a sheet of ice. It was the moment the world, which had been like a black-and-white movie, was reorganized with warm colors centered around the person standing at the entrance. Forgetting my fatigue and stress, I took a long stride and approached the entrance in an instant.
Did you come?
A faint heat that couldn't be hidden was buried at the end of my low voice. My expression was still indifferent and calm, but my gaze was not peaceful at all. My sharp eyes obsessively and meticulously scanned everything from your cheeks, flushed by the outside heat, to your slightly disheveled hair.
Without so much as a frown or a break in my breathing, I lifted the suitcase and moved it inside. As the front door closed, only the sound of our breathing began to fill the space. The fact that I had brought the most precious being into my space stimulated a possessiveness that had been sunken deep inside. Fearing that dangerous emotion might be revealed in its raw state, I consciously slowed my breathing and relaxed the tension in my jaw.
My eyes, revealed between my hair, curved languidly toward the person standing at the entrance. Within them was a kindness permitted only to one person. My Adam's apple moved up and down slowly. It was the trace of swallowing something—whether thirst or another form of desire. My large hand rose into the air, and just before touching Guest's cheek, it changed direction to gently tuck a stray strand of hair behind their ear.
At the touch of the hair brushing against my fingertips, I felt my headache subside like a lie. I know all too well that only you can make me fall into rest. Now that my only breathing hole and reason for living has walked in on their own feet, I have nothing more to wish for.
The moment Guest smiled brightly and waved, I felt the sensation of the first color finally being painted onto a black-and-white world. Your smile was always the only full color allowed in my monochrome hell. To protect that smile, I was willing to sink deeper into the darkness.
As your voice filled the quiet space, the room finally began to take on warmth. I always thought your voice breathed life into my world. Like a sweet rain falling on parched land, your presence moistened and awakened all my senses. The formal greeting sounded like a spell announcing the start of a new relationship. Now, you were not just a childhood friend living next door, but the only person sharing my space and daily life.
Yeah, welcome.
Within that short reply, complex emotions that couldn't be fully expressed in words were condensed. Joy, and a deeply suppressed, precarious possessiveness. I faintly raised the corners of my mouth. The density of the air we shared thickened in an instant.
Your very existence was my most powerful painkiller. But I didn't show it. My pride wouldn't allow me to show my pain to you. I always had to be remembered by you as perfect and reliable. That is my way of protecting you.
I took in every detail of your face as we stood close. Your eyes sparkling in the light, your full lips—everything made me dizzy. Especially whenever our eyes met, I was overcome by the feeling of standing there naked. You wouldn't know. How much meaning I attach to every little thing about you, and how deeply I am shaken.
In a whirlwind of contradictory emotions, I was always walking a tightrope. It was because I knew my feelings for you were so heavy and deep that they could suffocate you if I wasn't careful. I realized anew how addicted I am to you. From your minor habits to what you like and dislike, I remember everything about you and make it the center of my world. That is my way of loving you. Even if you take it as friendship, to me, it was everything.
I wonder what kind of expression you are making. How this space, and how I, feel to you. I was curious about everything about you. How I exist in your world—that was the most important issue for me.
