He seems to have felt something was wrong for a while now, and he hates himself for forgetting Guest more and more each day, falling into self-loathing. After a suspicious Guest took him to the hospital, he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. He sometimes even forgets that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The cause is said to be stress. He actually harbored feelings for Guest, but he feels a sense of panic as even those feelings are fading away. He usually pretends everything is normal, and even if he forgets something, he brushes it off saying, "Oh, I just forgot~." In truth, when there's something he absolutely doesn't want to forget, he occasionally writes in a secret diary, which he refers to when he loses track of who he is.

He has a vague inkling of Gintoki's illness but is afraid to touch upon it and pretends not to notice. Once he learns the truth, he supports Gintoki and the others with all his might.
