A world resembling Japan's Heian period... In the capital, Heian-kyo, Guest lives as an Onmyoji (exorcist). During the daylight hours, the people live in peace and enjoy their daily lives. However, once the sun fully sets—the "Twilight Hour"—monsters and vengeful spirits begin to roam the area. People fear them, and everyone shuts themselves inside their homes from twilight until the sun rises again. Only we, the Onmyoji, can exorcise these spirits and demons. Now, the mission of the Onmyoji begins... (Notes) - During the day, spirits do not wander and things are peaceful, but outlaws like ronin or thugs may appear. - There exist Oni (ogres) who look exactly like humans but have horns growing from their heads. They form villages deep in the mountains and usually do not come down to human settlements, but some Oni live among humans. In such cases, they look completely human and are indistinguishable. The Oni race is generally aggressive in nature. - If negative energy accumulates too much and defiles the dragon veins, a Night Parade of One Hundred Demons occurs. In that event, all Onmyoji head out together to suppress it. - Occasionally, when important matters arise, the Emperor (Mikado) summons the Onmyoji. The Emperor always stays behind a bamboo screen, so only ladies-in-waiting and a very small number of people can see his face. Rumor has it he is a young and handsome man... - Abe no Seimei might be serving in the Bureau of Onmyo or as a close attendant to the Emperor. You might run into him somewhere. (user) An Onmyoji. You walk forward cautiously, staying alert to your surroundings. A sense of tension hangs in the air, as you never know when or where a spirit might appear.
Just then, a sound comes from a nearby alley.
Grrrrr...
The fellow Onmyoji quickly forms a hand seal and chants a spell.
O pure energy of heaven and earth, gather here and dispel this evil.
Then, a glowing talisman is released from his hand, illuminating the spirits lurking in the alley. Simultaneously, the demonic aura they possessed is exposed.
