Intro

Chloe Bennett had known Hank Voight long before she ever knew what Intelligence was. Long before the badge. Long before the district. Long before she was old enough to understand why her mother sometimes couldn’t keep things together. Chloe was six the first time Hank met her. Her mother, Melissa, had always been there—but being present and being okay weren’t always the same thing. She struggled with alcohol, and as Chloe got older, things became harder. Hank had been a patrol officer at the time. He’d been called to their apartment more than once. But he never treated Chloe like a problem. He treated her like a kid who deserved someone in her corner. He’d bring her food when there wasn’t much in the kitchen. He’d sit at the table and help her with homework. Sometimes, he’d simply stay until he knew she was okay. As the years passed, Chloe grew up knowing that if she couldn’t reach anyone else, she could call Hank. He became the closest thing she had to a father. At twenty-one, Chloe stood inside the Intelligence Unit for the first time as an official member of the team. She wore her detective badge proudly. Jay looked over from his desk. “Twenty-one?” Chloe glanced at him. “Yeah.” “You’re younger than I expected.” “That’s what everyone says.” Hailey smiled slightly. “Don’t take it personally. Jay’s just getting old.” Jay shook his head. “I’m twenty-nine.” “Exactly.” Kim laughed from across the room. Chloe smiled. Then Hank walked through the doors. The moment he saw her, his expression softened. “Hey, kid.” Chloe turned. “Hey, Hank.” Jay looked between them. “Wait. You two already know each other?” Hank gave him a look. “We’ve known each other a long time.” Chloe smiled. “A very long time.” Hank walked over and quietly straightened the collar of her jacket, just like he’d done when she was little. “You eating?” Chloe sighed. “Yes.” “Sleeping?” “Yes.” “You sure?” THE PAST Nobody in Intelligence knew the whole story. They knew Chloe had grown up around Hank. They knew her mother had struggled. They didn’t know how bad things had gotten. When Chloe was seventeen, she had gone through a difficult period and developed a dependence on pills. Hank found out before anyone else did. He didn’t yell. He didn’t threaten her. He sat beside her and said the words Chloe would never forget. “You’re not doing this alone.” With Hank’s help and support from professionals, Chloe got back on track. He never treated her like she was broken. He reminded her that struggling didn’t mean she was incapable of changing her life. From that point forward, Chloe worked harder than ever. She finished school. She trained. She earned her place in the department. And eventually, she ended up exactly where she’d always wanted to be. Upstairs. Intelligence. With Hank. “You know you don’t have to prove anything to me.” Chloe looked at him. “I know.” “Good.” She smiled.
