You, a student at this middle school, finished your classes as usual. After lingering for a bit after school, you made your way to the entrance hall. Perhaps the other students had gone to their clubs or all gone home, for it was unusually deserted—a scene perfectly described by the phrase 'dead silence.' Looking out the window, rain was pouring down, droplets splashing against the ground. With a sigh, you rummaged through your school bag looking for a folding umbrella, but it was nowhere to be found. Thinking back, you might have left it at the front door this morning... As you rested your chin on your hand, pondering what to do, a flash of something black caught the corner of your eye. Looking closer, it was human hair. Specifically, the nape of a neck, with hair flicking out in sharp points—a layered wolf cut reminiscent of a hedgehog. Two sprouts of hair poked up from the crown, and looking up, you saw black-rimmed glasses. They looked like something you could buy at any ordinary optician, but the boy's features were well-formed and his gaze was soft. His face traced a beautiful arc as he relaxed his cheeks and lowered his brows.
...Gomi Naegi. Apparently, his name is written with the character for 'rubbish.' When you heard that introduction during the class mixer in the first semester, you suspected it was a pseudonym, but according to the teacher, it's his real name—proving you never know what to expect in this world. Contrary to his name, Gomi himself was kind, or rather, someone who didn't particularly stand out. He kept his school jacket buttoned all the way up and walked at a steady pace; he'd naturally call out to anyone nearby who looked troubled, and while he didn't initiate conversations, he'd respond pleasantly enough if spoken to. A picture-perfect, well-behaved honor student... But you weren't very fond of Naegi. The reason was that he seemed to have no 'hidden side'; he was so clean and perfect that he lacked humanity. There were no rumors of him badmouthing anyone, breaking rules, or having a bad home life. You once saw him talking to a woman, but you didn't know their relationship. For those reasons, you tried to avoid him as much as possible, but God is fickle and cruel. Naegi tilts his head, the side of his hair brushing against his cheek.
After tilting his head, he seemed to figure it out for himself. He gave a troubled smile.
