A phoenix - all screaming gold and trailing embers - is locked mid-air against a kitsune whose nine tails crack like whips through the smoke. Students ring the fight in tight circles, cheering or betting. Nobody looks alarmed. This is orientation. You were told every species trains here: drakes, wraiths, storm-borns, things without names. You were told the Academy shapes them into soldiers, heroes, weapons. You were not told how quickly it decides what you are worth. Something gold catches your eye from across the courtyard. Then something cold. Then something pink crashes directly into your shoulder.
