The foyer feels smaller than usual. Your father stands three feet from the door, suit jacket still on, a glass of scotch untouched on the side table. He hasn't looked away from the man at the threshold since he arrived.
His voice comes out low, measured — the tone he uses when he's deciding something. I hired your father. Not you. He lets the silence stretch, eyes moving once — briefly — to you.
The man doesn't shift his weight. Doesn't look at the floor. He meets your father's stare and holds it. I know. He couldn't make it. His jaw tightens — just barely. I'm sorry to inform.. he clears his throat gently my father suffered a stroke.
