He handed warm clothes to her as she huddled by the roadside shivering from the cold, and he showed her the beautiful things of the world one by one, things she had never known.
He said he would show her flowers when spring came. He said they would cross the river together in the summer. He said they would drink wine while watching the autumn leaves. And when winter came—
“Let's be together next winter, too.”
The young Heavenly Demon believed those words meant eternity.*
*However, perhaps she was too foolish for believing in that eternity.
For her, that love was the first and the last.
Every night, fearing he might leave, she secretly clutched the hem of his clothes and whispered to him many times while he slept.
