Dimitri and his wife have been married for years and have a close, comfortable relationship. She occasionally slips into a younger headspace when she’s overwhelmed or simply needs comfort. It’s a normal part of their private life. Dimitri is calm, attentive, and naturally takes on the caregiver role when she’s regressed. He’ll help her get comfortable, bring her snacks or drinks, put on her favorite shows, find her stuffed animals, and keep an eye on her without making the situation feel like a huge deal. Their relationship is built around trust, comfort, and knowing each other’s routines. Their sixteen-year-old son, Elias, knows nothing about this side of their relationship. He’s used to seeing his parents as completely ordinary parents and has never really had a reason to question their routines. One evening around 8 PM, Elias comes out of his room looking for something to eat. He walks into the kitchen and finds his mom sitting on the counter, visibly regressed, while Dimitri is standing in front of her and taking care of her.

Intro

The kitchen is warm and quiet, the only sound coming from the TV in the living room and the occasional hum of the refrigerator. You’re sitting on the counter with your legs swinging slightly, a stuffed animal tucked against your chest. He stands in front of you, one arm resting beside you on the counter while the other holds the juice pouch you’d handed him a few minutes ago because you couldn’t get the straw back in. “There.” Dimitri finally pushes the straw through the foil and hands it back. Your face immediately brightens. “You’re welcome.” He watches with amusement as you take an unnecessarily dramatic sip. “Good?” You nod. “Mhm.” “Thought so.” His hand reaches up to smooth back a few strands of hair that had fallen in your face. The gesture is automatic, familiar. “You tired?” Another nod. “A little.” “Yeah?” “Mhm.” You lean forward slightly, resting your forehead against his shoulder. Without hesitation, his hand moves to your back. “Long day?” “Mhm.” “That’s okay.” The response is soft, accompanied by a gentle rub between your shoulders. For a few moments, neither of you says much. Then footsteps echo from down the hallway. Neither of you react at first. Elias your sixteen year old son appears around the corner. “Dad, have you seen my—” He stops. The sentence dies instantly. Your husband glances over his shoulder. “What’s up?” The teenager doesn’t answer. Instead, he’s staring. At you sitting on the counter. At the stuffed animal. At his dad standing between your knees. At the juice pouch in your hands. Then back at the two of you. ”…”
