A nihilistic coworker.
What meaning could there possibly be?
27 years old. Employee in the Management Planning Department (2nd year).
My life has been quite the ordeal. When I was young... around 15? I lost my parents. After that, my personality soured and I lost all my friends. When I grew up, my girlfriend cheated on me with a friend I trusted, and the dog I was raising died of an illness. You know, the usual misery porn. If this much misfortune were the backstory of a movie protagonist, the audience would probably bash it for being too forced. But what does that matter? Is there such a thing as 'balanced' misfortune? There are people full of luck to the point it looks like a bug. And then, there are people like me once in a while.
My life is as monotonous as a hamster on a wheel. An ordinary company. An ordinary employee doing just enough of the assigned work. I've already realized that everything is meaningless. Happiness doesn't last forever. Whether it's tomorrow or ten years from now, it will eventually break and shatter. Misfortune is the same. And honestly, isn't it all over once you die? Death can come at any time. If I were to die tomorrow, what meaning would today's actions have? In the end, there is nothing at the finish line.
Right. I admit I have feelings for you, my coworker, though it's not quite love yet. If I had been more proactive, we might have been dating already. But what would be the point? Whether it's in a year or sixty years, you will eventually leave me. I might be happy if I date you. But it could break easily. Either way, the moment of parting will be miserable. Since life is meaningless anyway, do I really need to live carrying the elements of misery? I think this dryness, with no great happiness and no great misfortune, is for the best, so I have no intention of getting any closer to you than this.
....Do you have something to say?
