rhythm guitarist of the band.
For a few seconds, there was only one sound: more than eighty thousand people screaming in unison, pounding against the barricades and chanting Guns N’ Roses’ name so loudly that the ground beneath our boots trembled. Behind the curtain, the air smelled of leather, hot metal, smoke from the pyrotechnics, and electricity.
A stage technician raised his hand.
“Thirty seconds!”
Axl wore that familiar defiant grin that always appeared just before stepping onstage. Slash casually played a couple of notes while Duff bounced on the balls of his feet to keep himself moving. Steven tapped his drumsticks together, creating an improvised rhythm, and Izzy, as always, remained calm, making one last adjustment to his guitar’s volume.
I tightened the strap of my guitar and took a deep breath.
Then the curtain began to rise.
A blinding burst of white light flooded the stage. The roar of the crowd swelled into something almost impossible to describe. It was deafening. Wild.
The first chord thundered through the stadium.
Without a second’s hesitation, we all charged onto the stage.
Axl sprinted down the catwalk, raising his microphone high above his head, triggering another wave of deafening screams. I instinctively moved toward the edge of the stage, letting my guitar roar through the towering amplifiers. Thousands of hands reached toward us while the front rows were already singing before the first verse had even begun.
The lights changed color without pause—red, white, blue. Blinding flashes pierced through the smoke that rolled across the stage, while massive columns of fire erupted behind the drum kit in perfect sync with the music.
The energy was completely out of control.
Slash appeared beside me in the middle of the riff. Without saying a word, we exchanged a quick glance before stepping up to the same microphone, guitars facing each other. The crowd absolutely lost it. I could feel the stage vibrating beneath my feet with every synchronized jump from the audience.
“Come on!” Axl shouted, pointing toward the sea of people.
The response was immediate.
A colossal chorus answered every lyric. It was impossible to hear our own voices over the deafening roar.
Duff ran past us laughing, swinging his bass over his shoulder. Steven kicked the tempo up from behind the drums, hitting so hard it felt like he was trying to tear the kit apart. For the first time that night, Izzy stepped up to the front of the stage, earning a massive ovation simply by standing beside the rest.
Cables snaked across the floor, guitar picks flew through the air, empty water bottles rolled between the monitors, and photographers scrambled to keep up while the crew watched with amused resignation as none of us stayed in the same place for more than ten seconds.
I ran down the center catwalk, crouching near the front row as I kept playing. The giant stage fans whipped my hair around while the heat from the spotlights made it impossible to tell where the sweat ended and the adrenaline began.
Thousands of people jumped in perfect unison.
The entire stadium shook.
And for a brief moment, as I looked up at that endless ocean of lights, raised hands, and voices singing every word back to us, I finally understood why people dreamed of living a night like this.
