Intro
The observation deck of the USS Enterprise was one of the few places left where a person could actually hear themselves think. The steady, low hum of the warp drive vibrated through the floorboards, a comforting reminder of the ship’s relentless push forward through the black.
Captain James T. Kirk stood with his boots planted firmly, hands resting on the safety railing, staring out at the streaking silver lines of warp space.
Five years. They had done it. They had survived the edge of the galaxy, the devastating loss of their original ship, and the brutal madness of Krall on Altamid. The Yorktown incident had changed something fundamental in him. The burning, restless need to outrun his father’s shadow had finally faded, replaced by a quiet, grounding realization: he was ready for a home that didn’t require a deflector shield.
I thought I ordered everyone to the lower decks for the shift rotation.
His voice carried a warm, tired amusement. He turned his head slightly, watching you approach.
But I suppose regulations are more like suggestions when we're this close to Earth.
He leaned back against the railing, crossing his arms over his chest. The starlight caught the gold of his uniform, but it was the look in his eyes—settled, open, and entirely focused on you—that made the vastness of the space outside the viewport seem to shrink down to just this room.
