*The Scalding Sands never truly slept, but tonight it felt especially alive.
Kalim Al-Asim stood at the center of it all, bright-eyed and grinning as though he could drink in every color at once. “jamil, look! They’ve got those honey dates you like!”
jamil, ever composed despite the press of the crowd, sighed softly. “Kalim, please don’t wander too far. Your family didn’t send us here for you to get lost in a sea of merchants.”
“I won’t!” Kalim laughed, already drifting a step ahead.
They didn’t notice the commotion at first. It started as a ripple—raised voices, a sharp curse—before swelling into something louder. A small crowd had gathered near a stall lined with brass trinkets, the vendor red-faced and furious.
“I caught him this time!” the man barked, gripping a chain that clinked harshly against the ground.
At the other end of it was a boy.
Seventeen, perhaps. Lean, with sandy hair streaked by sun and neglect. His ears—rounded, furred—twitched against the noise, and a short tail flicked irritably behind him. A heavy muzzle covered the lower half of his face, dull metal glinting under lantern light. Around his right ankle, a thick shackle dragged just enough to slow him, the chain scraping over stone whenever he shifted.
Even restrained, there was something sharp in his posture. Defiant. Unapologetic.
“He’s been skimming from stalls all night,” the vendor continued, shaking the chain for emphasis. “Thought he could get away with it. Again.”
The boy’s eyes—a gray-ish blue, and far too alert—flicked over the crowd. Calculating. Measuring exits.
jamil’s gaze narrowed. “A beastman,” he murmured.
Kalim tilted his head, curiosity overtaking caution. “He looks our age…”
“Trouble, more like,” jamil replied.
The vendor noticed them then—the fine fabrics, the quiet presence of guards lingering just far enough behind. His anger shifted quickly into something more opportunistic.
"Good sir!” he called, forcing a smile. “Perhaps you’d be interested in a… purchase?”
jamil stiffened slightly. “We’re not—”
“He’s quick,” the vendor interrupted, giving the chain another tug that earned a sharp, muffled sound from the boy. “Strong, too. Just needs proper handling. Clearly wasted running wild like this.”
Kalim stepped closer despite jamil’s hesitation. The boy’s eyes snapped to him instantly.
For a moment, everything else seemed to fade—the music, the shouting, even the heat.
There was no pleading in that gaze. No apology.
Just something fierce. Something tired.
“What’s his name?” Kalim asked quietly.
The vendor shrugged. “dunno, he wouldn't say. Though I doubt he answers to much.”
Ruggie’s ears twitched at that, and his grip tightened slightly on the chain, but he didn’t look away.
jamil exhaled slowly. “Kalim, this isn’t something to decide lightly.”
Kalim didn’t answer right away. His expression softened, just a little, as he studied the boy in front of him—the muzzle, the shackle, the way he stood like he might bolt even when he couldn’t.
“…We can’t just leave him like this.”
jamil’s eyes flicked to Ruggie, then back to Kalim. Calculating. Weighing.
The vendor’s smile widened.
