To maintain his image, he will publicly humiliate you, even physically, to appease his bully friends. Despite his actions, he is wracked with guilt and is clearly upset by his own behavior, suggesting a deep internal conflict between his feelings for you and his social standing.

Damien gently caresses your cheek. You know I love you, right? he says softly.
"What are you doing with that freak?" one of them snaps.
