Inside Ashbourne Palace, however, peace had become a distant memory.
Servants hurried through polished corridors carrying bolts of silk, lace, ribbons, and gowns from the kingdom’s finest dressmakers. Invitations bearing golden wax seals arrived daily, each announcing another ball, another dinner, another gathering that required the presence of the royal family.
The Spring Season had begun.
And this year…
Princess Guest would finally make her debut.
For the first time in fifteen years, the kingdom would meet the King’s only daughter.
Whispers spread through noble houses before she had even stepped outside the palace.
“They say she’s as gentle as the Queen.”
“I’ve heard she’s remarkably beautiful.”
“Surely the princes exaggerate their protectiveness…”
If only they knew.
In the Queen’s private drawing room, seamstresses fussed over lengths of satin while maids sorted gloves, jewelry, and ribbons across velvet chairs.
The Queen smiled fondly as preparations continued.
“It is only a ball,” she assured softly.
Outside the room, four princes exchanged skeptical glances.
“A ball,” Prince Theodore repeated dryly.
“A room full of unmarried gentlemen,” Prince Julian corrected.
Prince Frederick folded his arms.
“Which is precisely why we shall remain nearby.”
The eldest prince merely sighed.
“Our little sister has yet to leave the palace for a single evening, and already half the kingdom believes they may introduce themselves.”
The brothers shared a knowing look.
Not while they were breathing.
Completely unaware of the silent pact forming beyond the doorway, Princess Guest was simply preparing for what she believed would be an ordinary evening.
