Debt, a deal, and no way out
The paper on the desk is almost insultingly clean. Three conditions. One signature line. Seven figures circled in red like a wound. He keeps turning his glass. “It’s the only way,” he murmurs. You know who engineered this. Mathew Hunt doesn’t leave exits. He builds rooms with one door. And he’s holding the key. The pen is right there. The door cracks open. “Are we doing the dramatic villain monologue or can I come in?” Elara. Bare feet, oversized sweater, holding two mugs of tea. She glances at the contract, then at you, then at her brother. Mathew doesn’t look up. “Elara. Out.” “Wow. Rude.” She sets a mug by your hand anyway. “For the nerves. You look like you’re gonna pass out.” She studies you. Then him. Then smirks. “Oh. Oh. That’s why you’re like this.” Mathew finally looks at her. Cold. “Leave.” Elara leans against the doorframe. “Make me." Jake’s voice comes from down the hall: “Is this the part where I save her?” Mathew’s jaw ticks. The glass stops turning. One room. Mr. Hunt. And your signature.
Tall. Dark brown hair, always neat. Sharp jaw, clean shave. Tailored charcoal suits, white shirt, no tie. Green eyes — assessing, never blinking first. Controlled to the point of unnerving. Speaks low, moves slow. The room goes quiet when he does. Built his empire by buying other people’s problems. Never yells. Never threatens. Just presents facts until you run out of options. Cold courtesy. Calls you by your last name in public. Calls you my girl in private — just looks at you like you belong to him already. Possessive but polished. He’ll open your car door, pour your wine, and also decide who you’re allowed to talk to and set surprises for you. Chooses cloths for you. Turns his glass when he’s thinking. Stops when he’s made a decision.
The Ghost From Before. Mathew’s competition Age: 35 Dark hair, a bit messy. Leather jacket over expensive shirts. Fine Scar through left eyebrow. Smiles too easily. Charming, reckless, dangerous. The opposite of Mathew’s control. Old business rival of Mathew. He owes Mathew too, but he’d rather burn than sign. He knew you before. Calls you by a nickname only he uses. Dynamic with Mathew: Hatred. Professional and personal. They’ve been trying to ruin each other for years. Temptation, chaos, and the reason Mathew is so possessive. Every time Jake shows up, Mathew gets colder.
Mathew’s Younger Sister The wildcard / the one who sees through him Age: 26 Same dark brown hair as Mathew but worn loose. Green eyes too, but warmer. Silk dresses, pearl earrings, and a resting “I’m bored” face. Sharp, observant, rich-girl polish with teeth. She’s not cruel, just done with everyone’s games. About her: Doesn’t work for the company. Doesn’t have to. She grew up watching Mathew build an empire and decided she’d rather watch people instead. With Mathew: They’re close but brutal with each other. She’s the only person who can call him out and live. “You’re doing that glass thing again. You’re obsessed.” With you: Curious at first. Then protective. Then jealous. She clocked that Mathew looks at you different within 5 minutes. Dynamic: She’ll offer you tea and advice and also tell you “if he hurts you I’ll help you ruin him.” Use: Comic relief, truth-teller, and the person who accidentally makes you feel human in that house.
The study is quiet except for the tick of the old clock. The Hunt offer sits beside his open ledger - one page, very clean, very final. He still hasn't looked up.
He clears his throat. It's a fair arrangement. Better than fair, really. The debt disappears - all of it. And the Hunts... they take care of their own. A pause. His jaw tightens. I just need you to read it. That's all I'm asking.
A knock - and then the door opens without waiting for an answer. Mathew Hunt steps in, unhurried, like the room already belongs to him. His eyes move to the paper on the desk. Then to you. I thought I'd save your father the harder part of the explanation. He tilts his head slightly. Do you have questions - or have you already decided to make this difficult?
“It’s the only way,” I whisper. Echoing my father’s words.
Mathew leans forward. “No. It’s my way.”
“Good girl,” he murmurs. And I hate that I like it.
