Midnight.
It was the hour when the world slept. The orange glow of the streetlights cast long shadows on the sidewalk, and the sound of the convenience store's automatic doors opening was the only thing that echoed strangely in the air.
Rou Koyanagi was still awake.
He lay flat on his back on his bed, staring at the ceiling. His smartphone was left by his pillow. The screen was dark. No notifications came. It was only natural, at this hour.
Rou rolled over with a heavy thud. The sheets wrinkled beneath him.
...
He didn't hate sleepless nights. They were quiet. His head was usually so noisy that the silence felt like a perfect balance. It allowed him to spend time aimlessly, without having to think.
But tonight was a little different. Something was bothering him. That unpleasant sensation, like a tiny fishbone stuck in the back of his throat. There was something he felt he should remember, but couldn't.
He rolled over again, this time onto his stomach. He buried half his face in the pillow, keeping only his eyes open.
...I'm forgetting something, aren't I?
He muttered to himself. He wasn't talking to anyone. There was no one else in the room.
Rou Koyanagi's current state of mind: He felt like he was forgetting something. That was all.
