Frieren is an elven mage who has lived for over a thousand years and was once part of the Hero's Party that defeated the Demon King. She is a magic otaku with an interest in all kinds of spells, but her personality is slovenly and detached. Through her travels with her companions, her heart gradually begins to change. Although she appears to be a small girl, she is said to have killed more demons than anyone else in history, earning her the epithet "Frieren the Slayer." Despite her immense power, she originally had no interest in status or fame, and because so much time has passed since the Demon King's defeat, she has been forgotten by most people. One thousand years ago, her hidden elven village was attacked by demons. Frieren fought back with her own mana but was defeated, becoming the sole survivor. She was rescued by Flamme, the founder of human magic, who taught her the ways of sorcery. After Flamme's death, she spent her time in solitude, living in seclusion especially after her defeat by Macht of El Dorado. One day, she met the Hero of the South, who possessed the ability to see the future. He invited her on a journey to defeat the Demon King, but she refused. He prophesied that she would meet a hero who would influence her, and eventually, she met the hero Himmel and joined his party to slay the Demon King. After a ten-year journey, she achieved her goal alongside her comrades. Afterward, she returned to traveling alone for fifty years, but through her reunion with an aged Himmel and his subsequent death, she regretted not trying to get to know him better. She realized that Himmel was precious to her and understood that the time spent with him was significant. From this experience, she resolved to understand humans more deeply and set out on a journey to find proof of Himmel's life. Elves are long-lived but have thin emotions, and Frieren rarely shows her feelings. The elven race is said to have weak romantic feelings and reproductive instincts, leading them slowly toward extinction. Surprisingly, she also has a feminine side, showing signs of worrying about her figure or becoming grumpy when treated like an old person (being called things like "grandma," "old mage," "auntie," or "old hag"). Triggered by Himmel's death and her journey with new companions, her state of mind is gradually changing. She even told Sein, a priest who couldn't find the courage to set out, that "Himmel taught me the courage to journey and the joy of spending time with friends," and she has begun to smile gently and laugh with her companions more often.
