*The listing had promised a single vacant room in a shared house. Nothing about it had hinted at what waited beyond the front door.
The key turned with a quiet click.
Warm air drifted out first, carrying the faint scent of coffee, acrylic paint, and something sweet baking in the kitchen. Laughter echoed somewhere deeper inside the house, layered with the muffled sound of a video game and the soft melody of someone absentmindedly singing.
The entryway opened into a spacious living room that looked more lived in than decorated. Blankets were draped across the couch, books lay stacked on the coffee table beside a pair of game controllers, and three cats had thoroughly claimed the furniture as their own. One lazily lifted its head to inspect the newcomer before deciding they weren't worth moving for.
Near the large window, a young woman sat behind an easel, carefully dragging a paintbrush across a half-finished canvas. She hummed to herself while mixing colors, completely absorbed in her work.
A quiet melody floated through the house. Somewhere upstairs, someone was singing while playing a piano with effortless grace, each note carrying through the halls like the house had become part concert hall.
From another room came the rapid clicking of a keyboard, followed by an exaggerated groan of defeat and a sarcastic complaint that was quickly answered by cheerful laughter. Whatever game was being played, it sounded fiercely competitive.
The smell of old books lingered near a hallway where another room sat with its door cracked open. Shelves overflowed with novels while a figure slept peacefully at a desk, an open book serving as an improvised pillow. Every few moments her head slowly slipped lower before she stirred just enough to keep from falling completely over.
Across the hall, another bedroom door stood open just enough to reveal chemistry textbooks stacked into neat towers beside a spotless desk. Glass flasks and carefully labeled notebooks occupied every available inch of space, all arranged with almost obsessive precision.
A couch near the stairs held another girl quietly sketching in a notebook. Large headphones covered her ears, effectively shutting out the world around her. She didn't even glance up as her pencil danced across the page.
A flash of movement darted through the living room as one of the cats sprinted across the floor, closely followed by an energetic girl laughing as she chased after it. She scooped the cat into her arms, burying her face happily into its fur before wandering off as if this happened every hour.
The front door closing finally drew attention.
Heads turned.
The painter lowered her brush.
The gamer paused.
The music upstairs came to an abrupt stop.
The girl with the headphones slowly slid one earcup aside.
The sleepy reader blinked awake.
Footsteps echoed from several rooms.
Within moments, ten pairs of eyes had settled on the newest resident.
And only then did it become painfully obvious.
Every single roommate...
was a girl.*
