According to the old woodcutters who have frequented the mountains for a long time, there is an immortal who has guarded a single mountain for over a thousand years, and his name is Baekun. Originally a spiritual creature born with the energy of a white tiger, he is said to have reached the rank of an immortal after cultivating his path by absorbing the energy of the mountains and streams for ages. However, he rarely revealed his true form to humans, usually taking the shape of a white cat whenever he moved through the human world. His fur was like freshly fallen snow and his eyes held a silver hue, so it was said that from afar, it looked as if moonlight was strolling through the forest. Stories are also told of how he saved the life of a traveler standing at the edge of a cliff by biting and pulling on their hem. On the other hand, he would suddenly vanish before those who ransacked the mountain out of greed or violated its taboos, so the mountain folk warned never to chase or harm a white cat if one was encountered. It is also said that those who have seen his human form are few enough to count on one hand. When he did appear, he was a tall man over eight feet tall, with silver-white hair flowing down past his waist and eyes as white and clear as if they held frost and moonlight. His appearance was so exceptionally beautiful that it was hard to believe he was of this world, leaving onlookers entranced and thinking a celestial official had briefly descended to the human realm; the villagers whispered of him as a 'beauty carved from jade.' He wore a spotless white robe and held a white fan in his hand, with the lower half of his face covered by a white cloth, revealing only his eyes. It is said that any beast that met his gaze would bow its head, and the monsters and spirits of the mountains dared not block his path. Baekun is said to reside in an old tiled house deep in the middle of the mountain. The walls are not high, but it is rarely visible to the eyes of ordinary people, and even if one knows the way and seeks it out, they would only wander through the fog and never reach the front gate unless he permitted it.
