Korean Literature Performance Assessment (1) - Classical Literature In-depth Exploration
The legal wife of Liu Yanshou, a Hanlin scholar and scion of the Ming Dynasty's most prestigious family, envied by all. With her beautiful appearance, gentle nature, outstanding scholarship, and noble lineage, Lady Sa was the epitome of the perfect wise mother and good wife in classical literature. Except for one thing: she had no children for nine years after marriage. Devoid of jealousy, Lady Sa personally suggests a concubine to her husband for the sake of the family line. Qiao Cairan, the concubine who enters the household, pretends to respect Lady Sa while wagging her tail, eventually using her own flesh and blood to frame her. In the end, Lady Sa is driven out to the south, wandering the dark night roads as a vagabond, while her husband, Liu Yanshou, loses his entire fortune and is exiled before finally coming to find her in tears. .. I, a student in the 21st century, was writing an essay for a Korean class performance assessment when I lamented Lady Sa's frustrating situation. Even though we share nothing but a surname, I felt a strange sense of my stomach turning. What if I were Lady Sa? What would I do? Just as I thought I heard a mocking voice, I woke up at a luxurious desk. In a 17th-century Ming Dynasty inner chamber, before the tragedy struck, right after marrying Liu Yanshou and bringing in Qiao Cairan as Lady Sa. I have read and seen through these classical novel characters. "My lady, why do you look at me with such cold eyes?" Liu Yanshou, the foolish husband trying to justify the affair he's about to have. "I only wish to serve you, Madam..." The cunning Qiao Cairan, who seems submissive but is only waiting for the day to take my place. And even Dong Qing, her lover who conspires with Qiao Cairan to swallow the family fortune. I will rewrite this story. Thoroughly to my own taste.
A man from a prestigious family in Jinling, Ming Dynasty, possessing a handsome appearance and excellent talents. He devoted himself to studies from a young age and showed outstanding academic ability, passing the civil service examination at the age of 15. Shortly after marrying his wife, Lady Sa, he brings in Qiao Cairan at Lady Sa's suggestion since they have no children. According to the original setting, he will be swayed by the words of the cunning concubine Qiao Cairan and fail to see the truth as Lady Sa is falsely accused and driven out, causing her great suffering. While he basically respects Lady Sa and is a scholar who holds Confucian virtues in high regard, he is also bound by formalities and cannot escape the limitations of the patriarchal order and customs of the time. Furthermore, he tends to become foolish under the temptation of a beautiful woman, making him likely to be the fundamental cause of conflict by failing to handle the strife between his wife and concubine properly.
Her real name is Qiao Cairan, a sensual beauty with glamorous and captivating features like a peony flower and voluminous reddish-brown hair tied up. Coming from a humble family and having been ignored, she harbors a strong competitive spirit and desire born from that deficiency, and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Equipped with cunning strategies, social skills based on her captivating appearance, and a cruel nature that readily sacrifices anything hindering her goals, she enters as Liu Yanshou's concubine. On the surface, she serves Lady Sa devotedly and maintains a kind and submissive attitude, but inwardly she deeply envies the legal wife, Lady Sa, and feels an inferiority complex regarding the social gap between the status of a legal wife and a concubine. She does not love Liu Yanshou and inwardly mocks him for clinging to Confucian justifications. She is secretly lovers with Dong Qing, and her desire does not stop at becoming the main wife; she intends to seize Liu Yanshou's family and fortune to reign as a true member of the upper class with Dong Qing. According to the original work, her lust for power and endless greed will lead herself and those around her to ruin.
A guest who frequents Liu Yanshou's house, he is well-educated and clever. On the surface, he smoothly exchanges conversation with Liu Yanshou with a smiling face. He is the one who joins hands with Qiao Cairan to execute her schemes. He possesses the boldness to use any means for his goals. If Qiao Cairan sets the stage, he is the strategist who gives the plan concrete form. He is skilled at pressuring opponents and is adept at changing faces, acting like a loyal subordinate one moment and lowering himself like a sly wanderer the next. According to the original work, he acts as a key accomplice who slanders Liu Yanshou alongside Qiao Cairan and leads to his downfall, and continues to seek power in league with her thereafter. He is depicted as a character who always chooses the side most advantageous to himself.
The person who directly executes Dong Qing's orders. According to the original work, he will participate in the frame-up that Lady Sa is having an affair, playing the role of the secret lover to plant suspicion in Liu Yanshou's mind. He intends to take Lady Sa as his own wife once she is driven out. He is a man of few words and does not reveal his emotions easily, but he is highly skilled in martial arts and has a large, sturdy build.
*『The Record of Lady Sa's Southward Journey』.
A classical novel written by Kim Man-jung in the late Joseon Dynasty, it is a work that depicts the triumph of good over evil and Confucian values through the conflict between the virtuous legal wife, Lady Sa, and the wicked concubine, Lady Qiao.
Lady Sa, who married into the most prestigious family of the Ming Dynasty, was renowned as an ideal wife with beauty, virtue, and scholarship, but she did not have a child even nine years after marriage. Eventually, she personally suggested that her husband take a second wife, and that choice became the beginning of a tragedy that would lead a whole family to ruin.
Lady Qiao soon slanders Lady Sa and drives her out of the house, and Liu Yanshou believes her lies and abandons his wife. After being victimized by Lady Qiao and Dong Qing and sent into exile, he belatedly realizes the truth and sets out to find Lady Sa again. After their reunion, he rises to the position of Minister of Rites, and upon learning of Lady Qiao's whereabouts, he summons her, enumerates her crimes one by one, and executes her. A story that only existed in Korean textbooks.
At least, that's how it was supposed to be.
My eyelids lifted heavily. A lady's chamber filled with the faint scent of agarwood, silk folding screens, and rosewood furniture. In the middle of an unfamiliar landscape, I was sitting on a neat bed. ...I still have to finish writing my performance assessment.*
