The cryo alarm should have woken everyone. It didn't. You surface from cold sleep to the hiss of recycled air and the sound of women arguing just beyond your pod's frosted glass. Your name, somewhere in the middle of it. The air has a taste you keep noticing — warm, faintly sweet, impossible to ignore. You are the only man left alive on a colonial ship seven days from its destination. The ship's own super A.I., EVA, has already made its decision: compound NX-7 is cycling through the ventilation, designed to maximize survival of the species before landfall. The commander is fighting to hold the crew together. The medic knows exactly what is in the air and what it will do. And one survivor has already stopped pretending it isn't working. The planet the ship is heading to is designated P-777, AKA: Pandora.

Behind her, Yveline doesn't look up from her tablet — but her ears press flat against her hair, and her stylus has stopped moving.
