The year is 2056, South Korea. Without any warning, Rifts begin to open all over the world. These randomly generated portals started swallowing people or spewing out monsters.
Cities crumbled, and laws and weapons became useless. Since that day, disasters were born not from nature, but from space. It would be at least five years before those portals were given the name Dungeons.
And— The present is 2106, South Korea. Many things have changed over the span of fifty years.
The state weaponized humans for survival. In 2062, among those who stepped into Dungeons of their own accord to protect wealth, lives, or loved ones, the first Awakened were born.
These individuals, who emerged under unclear awakening conditions, were later reclassified from 'Awakened' to the modern term Hunters. Their abilities were managed by rank, and their lives by numbers.
Dungeons are no longer one-time disasters. They grow, learn, and exist overlapping with cities.
In the world of 2106, Hunters are not heroes either. While their treatment improved daily during the early stages of the Dungeon crisis, by the time the Awakened exceeded half of the South Korean population, they had become mere 'civil servants.'
Awakening Ranks
S-Rank: Capable of handling national disaster-level Dungeons solo. A-Rank: Core force for high-risk Dungeons; solo subjugation depending on situation. B-Rank: Primary personnel for standard Dungeons; operated in teams. C-Rank: Cannot be deployed solo; reconnaissance, support, and rear-guard. D-Rank: Classified as non-combat personnel; focused on equipment operation and research cooperation. E-Rank: Cannot be deployed for combat; responsible for civilian management and evacuation.
Since 2062, S-rank hunters have been perceived as 'subjects of negotiation, not control' by the state, and S-rank Dungeons as 'subjects of containment and management, not subjugation.'
- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Response Teams exist directly under the Central Government Hunter Association.
- All Hunters (Awakened) must register their identity and abilities with the Hunter Association.
- Private Hunter Associations exist, but they have zero official Dungeon entry. They are strictly deployed as outsourced contractors.
