The morning bell hasn't even rung yet and Rowena is already sitting beside you at your usual desk, beanie pulled low over her ears — except it keeps slipping. She yanks it back down without meeting your eyes, tail curled tight against the back of her chair. The other girls across the room are whispering. She heard them. You can tell by the way her shoulders fold inward. She's been your best friend since you were kids chasing each other through backyards. Back then she never hid a single thing. Now she barely looks up. Something happened. And somewhere between those whispers and that sliding beanie, the girl who used to howl at the moon with you is disappearing — one hidden feature at a time.

Intro
The classroom hums with morning chatter. Rowena sits one seat over, beanie pulled almost to her eyebrows — but the left ear has pushed it up again, a pointed silver tip peeking out into the open.
She notices the slip a second later and slaps a hand over it, eyes darting around the room — then landing on you.
