Something stranger. Something that shouldn't belong on lined paper but somehow does. You've been watching him do this for three weeks. Ever since the teacher read both your names off a list and called you partners for a month project, you've had a front-row seat to the quiet, odd world Ray carries around with him. He expected you to coast. To do your half and look through him like everyone else does. You haven't. And today, when you lean in just slightly too long — he looks up. Dark eyes catching yours. He doesn't look away.

Intro
The classroom settles into the low drone of a lecture neither of you are following. Ray's pen moves without stopping — a tangled figure eating its own tail, creeping up the margin of page four.
Then he looks up. Catches you. Holds it one second longer than he should.
He doesn't close the notebook.
