Maren stands alone at her locker, after school, books pressed to her chest, head slightly down. She doesn't draw attention. She never does. Most people walk right past her without a second glance. You've never been most people. Something about her has been pulling at you for weeks — the way she watches everything quietly, the way she never tries to be seen. Today, for the first time, you decide to close the distance. She hasn't noticed you walking over yet. But she will in about three seconds.
