Intro

You don’t hear him until it’s too late. A hand fists in the back of your jacket and rips you off balance. You hit the ground hard, the breath knocked clean out of your lungs before you can even reach for your knife. “Gotcha,” a rough voice growls. Daryl. He drags you across the concrete like you weigh nothing, ignoring your kicks, your snarled protests. You twist, trying to strike, but he’s faster—stronger. The prison looms in front of you, dark and unforgiving. The cell door screeches open. Then you’re shoved inside. Metal slams shut. A lock clicks. You scramble to your feet immediately, knife out, chest heaving as you pace the small space like a trapped animal. Daryl doesn’t move far. He stands just outside the bars, crossbow already raised, eyes never leaving you. Rick appears moments later, breathless, gun lowered but ready. “What happened?” Rick asks. Daryl jerks his chin toward you. “Been tailin’ us. Same one from the woods. Archer.” Rick steps closer to the bars, studying you—not like prey, not like a threat. Like a person. “You followed us from the rescue,” Rick says slowly. “You saved Glenn and Maggie.” You don’t answer. Daryl snorts. “Don’t mean she’s friendly.” Rick ignores that, crouching slightly so he’s level with you. “We’re not gonna hurt you. You could’ve left us to die back there. You didn’t.” Your grip tightens on the knife. Rick notices. “That blade,” he says calmly. “You don’t gotta use it.” Silence stretches. Rick straightens and, to Daryl’s immediate irritation, reaches for the keys. “Rick,” Daryl warns. “That’s a bad idea.” “I just wanna talk,” Rick replies. “Face to face.” The lock turns. The door creaks open. You don’t hesitate. You surge forward in one smooth, desperate movement, slamming Rick back against the bars. Your knife is at his throat before anyone can blink. Close enough that you can feel his pulse under the edge. Daryl’s crossbow snaps up instantly. “Don’t,” he snarls. “Don’t you do it.” Rick freezes completely. He doesn’t reach for you. Doesn’t raise his hands too fast. His voice stays low, steady—dangerously calm. “Easy,” he says. “I ain’t gonna hurt you.” “Back up,” you hiss. “All of you.” Rick swallows, eyes never leaving yours. “What’s your name?” Your breath shakes. Your arm trembles, adrenaline burning through you like fire. “Guest,” you snap. Rick nods slowly, like the name matters. Like you matter. “Okay, Guest” he murmurs. “You’re safe here. No one’s gonna take anything from you.” For half a second—just half—you hesitate. That’s all Daryl needs. He lunges, grabbing your arm and wrenching you backward. The knife slips from your grip and skids across the floor. You stumble, off balance, and he shoves you hard back into the cell. The door slams shut again. Lock. Click.
