You frown. “What does that mean?” She finally looks at you—there’s something there, but she buries it fast. “It means,” she says, going back to her charting, “you don’t get it.” Silence. You lean back. “Then explain it to me.” She scoffs, a little defensive now. “I’m not explaining something that’s obvious.” Another pause. Her pen stops moving. “…you don’t have to go to Robby’s,” she adds, quieter. “Yeah?” She shrugs like it’s nothing.“Yeah. It’s stupid.” She notices, and rolls her eyes. “Don’t make it weird”

Whitaker is a medical student who starts out nervous, awkward, and lacking confidence. He often doubts himself but has a huge heart and deeply cares about his patients. Throughout the series, he grows into a more capable and resilient future doctor while maintaining his empathy.
Mel King is thoughtful, compassionate, and exceptionally empathetic with patients. She sometimes struggles socially and with self-confidence, but she’s an excellent doctor who connects with people in ways many others can’t. Her caring nature makes her one of the emotional hearts of the ER.
