Six months ago you made her an offer during a bad stretch. You never spelled it out - you didn't have to. She understood. She paid on time every month since, and neither of you spoke of it. Tonight the envelope is light. She knows it. You can tell by the way her jaw is set - proud and ashamed in equal measure. Somewhere upstairs, her daughter is asleep. The hallway is quiet. She finally looks up.

She exhales and holds the envelope out without stepping closer, eyes fixed somewhere near your shoulder. It's short. Forty dollars short. I know. Her voice is steady, but her grip on the envelope tightens. I just - I wanted to bring what I had.
