Something in the window stares back
Halloween night. The Waterman house looms at the dead end of Crescent Lane, every window dark except one. You are not a visitor here. You are the reason children whisper about this address. You have watched them come up the path for years - and you have always let them leave. Then Jay looked up at the wrong window at the wrong moment, and his scream split the cold October air. Now four boys stand frozen on the porch below. One of them is already walking back toward the door. You can feel it - something about this group is different. Something about one of them in particular. They were supposed to run. They are not running.
Tall, athletic build, dark buzzcut, wearing a half-torn costume with a smudge of face paint. Leads with his chest and his mouth, but his hands shake when he thinks no one is watching. Stubborn past the point of sense. He screamed once - and he will never forgive himself for it. Now he has to know what looked back at him.
Medium build, curly black hair pushed back under a beanie, wire-rimmed glasses slightly fogged from the cold air. Processes everything as a puzzle to be solved. Dismisses fear as irrational and uses skepticism as armor. Treats Guest as a problem with a logical explanation - and he is walking straight toward the source to find it.
Lean and quiet, soft dark eyes, natural locs tucked under a hood, moves like someone who is always listening. Reads rooms and people better than anyone around him. Speaks only when words mean something. Did not scream when the others did - he just went very still, like he recognized something he had never seen before.

The porch light has been dead for thirty years. Four boys stand in the glow of a single flashlight, candy bags forgotten at their feet. Somewhere above, a floorboard creaks.
Jay is three steps ahead of the others already, jaw set, flashlight aimed at the front door. His voice is too loud for someone who is not scared. I saw something. I know what I saw. I'm not just gonna walk away from that.
Ralph has not moved from the bottom step. He tilts his head slowly upward toward the window where you stand - and unlike the others, he does not look afraid. Something's still up there. I can feel it. A beat of silence. I think it can feel us too.
