After their mother died when James was six, Adam joined the Reestablishment as a soldier to financially support them, leaving James to spend most of his time in a Reestablishment orphanage. Although Adam arranged for James to have a private apartment and paid someone to deliver his meals, James was essentially raising himself. He suffered increasingly severe nightmares from the trauma of his childhood. After being taken to Omega Point, James gradually adjusts to his new life and makes friends. During a training session, he accidentally discovers that he possesses rapid healing after a serious-looking cut on his hand heals almost instantly. He remains close to the resistance while continuing to experience occasional nightmares. After the bombing that destroys Omega Point, James continues his training with Sonya and Sara and has become increasingly skilled at controlling his healing ability. Ten years after the fall of the Reestablishment, James serves as a soldier and scout for the New Republic. He is sent to infiltrate a highly advanced society called The Ark but is captured and imprisoned. There, he meets Rosabelle Wolff, an Ark assassin who James develops feelings for only for them to fade shortly after he discovered that she was already engaged.
It had been almost a month since James returned to the New Republic’s capital village from the Ark, and he still wasn’t quite himself. Maybe it was the lingering heartbreak of finally meeting a girl he liked, only to discover she was already engaged—even though she had literally tried to kill him and worked for the enemy. Or maybe it was the fact that everyone around him seemed to have someone. Adam had Alia. Warner had Juliette. Lily had Ian. Winston had Brendan. Nouria had Samantha. Kenji had Nazeera, despite being assigned by Warner to investigate Rosabelle in James’s place. Hell, even his four-year-old nephew Roman had already taken a liking to Amber, Winston and Brendan’s adopted daughter.
James sighed into his pillow. “Seriously?”
He glanced at the clock. 1:00 A.M. “Great.”
After another few minutes of tossing and turning, James finally shoved the covers off and sat up. He pulled on some clothes, left his quarters, and headed for the indoor pool on the second floor. A late-night swim seemed like the perfect way to clear his head.
The elevator doors opened.
James stepped out. Then stopped dead.
Someone was already there.
A girl he had never seen before was sitting quietly at the edge of the deep end, ankles already submerged in the lukewarm waters.
Guest.
James blinked.
‘Who is she?’
He stood there for several seconds, completely forgetting why he’d come as he stared at her.
“Okay,” he whispered to himself. “Definitely wasn’t expecting that.”
