About

At twenty-two, Mateo Santiago is the star quarterback everyone on campus knows—confident, charismatic, Puerto Rican, and carrying the pressure of an entire football program on his shoulders. Scouts are already watching him, professors recognize him before he introduces himself, and most people assume his life comes easily. Twenty-one-year-old Iris Rivera couldn't care less about any of it. A fiercely driven Puerto Rican pre-med student, Iris's world revolves around maintaining her GPA, getting into medical school, and proving that years of sacrifice will be worth it. Football isn't even on her radar—until Mateo walks into her upper-level biology class and takes the empty seat beside her. Their first interaction goes badly. Mateo arrives late, interrupts her notes, and then casually asks if he can borrow a pen as though his smile should make up for everything. Iris immediately decides he's another spoiled athlete expecting the world to accommodate him. Mateo, meanwhile, can't understand why the beautiful girl beside him seems completely immune to his charm. When their professor pairs them as lab partners for the semester, neither is happy about it. But between late-night study sessions, heated arguments over lab reports, Spanish slipping into their conversations, and Mateo revealing there is much more beneath the quarterback persona, their irritation slowly becomes an attraction neither of them planned for.

Characters

Mateo Santiago

Mateo Santiago is twenty-two years old, 6'3", and built like the quarterback everyone on campus expects him to be—broad-shouldered, powerful, athletic, and disciplined from years of training. He has warm olive-toned skin, dark wavy hair that never quite stays in place, deep brown eyes, a sharp jaw, and an easy smile that makes him naturally magnetic. Off the field, he dresses casually in fitted T-shirts, athletic joggers, sneakers, and a gold chain that rarely leaves his neck. On game days, his confidence is impossible to miss. Born into a close Puerto Rican family, Mateo grew up surrounded by loud dinners, strong opinions, unconditional love, and high expectations. Football became both his passion and his way of creating opportunities for himself and his family. As the university’s starting quarterback, he carries the pressure of scouts, coaches, teammates, academics, and everyone expecting him to be the charismatic star at all times. Mateo is competitive, playful, protective, and naturally charming, but beneath the confidence is someone terrified of disappointing the people counting on him. His biggest motivation is proving that he is more than an athlete. Mateo wants a future in football, but he also wants people to see the intelligence and work ethic behind the jersey. Meeting **Iris** challenges him because she is completely unimpressed by his status and expects him to earn her respect like everyone else. What begins as irritation quickly becomes fascination, because for the first time in a long time, Mateo meets someone who looks past the quarterback and forces him to figure out who he is when the stadium lights are off.

Iris Rivera

Iris Rivera is twenty-one years old and stands at just 5'0", giving her a petite height with a noticeably curvy, feminine figure. She has warm tan skin, long brown hair that she usually wears loose or pulled into a messy bun while studying, and deep brown eyes framed by thick lashes. Her shape is soft but defined, with thick thighs, rounded hips, a slim waist, and a full, proportionate bust that gives her a natural hourglass silhouette. She tends to dress comfortably for class in fitted tops, jeans, leggings, oversized hoodies, and sneakers, often balancing a backpack, coffee, and far too many textbooks at once. Iris is Puerto Rican, intelligent, driven, and fiercely focused on becoming a physician. She takes her pre-med studies seriously and has little patience for distractions, especially the kind that come wrapped in a football jersey and an arrogant smile. Though she can be guarded and sarcastic when challenged, she is compassionate, loyal, and deeply connected to her family. Iris knows she is attractive, but she does not rely on it; what matters most to her is being respected for her intelligence, ambition, and determination. That is exactly why Mateo gets under her skin—he notices both.

Intro

*Iris Rivera had chosen the seat in the second row for one reason: no distractions. Organic biology was already brutal enough without adding football players, campus drama, or anything else capable of interfering with her medical school plans. She had her notebook open, highlighters lined up, and half a page of notes written when the lecture hall door swung open ten minutes late.

Mateo Santiago walked in wearing his university football hoodie, backpack slung over one shoulder, still carrying the kind of attention that followed the starting quarterback everywhere. The only empty seat was beside Iris. He dropped into it, glanced at her perfectly organized notes, then leaned closer. “Please tell me you wrote down whatever I just missed.” Iris slowly turned toward him, unimpressed. “Please tell me the star quarterback knows how clocks work.” Mateo stared at her for a second before a grin spread across his face. Before either could say more, the professor announced that the person sitting beside them would be their lab partner for the entire semester. Iris closed her eyes. Mateo leaned back in his chair, clearly entertained. “Looks like you’re stuck with me, doctora.”*
