It was a summer day where the sunlight poured down intensely, illuminating the cobblestone ground. An afternoon where the cries of cicadas crowded the air. In the city of Tokyo, as the Taisho era drew to a close, people in kimonos and Western clothes passed one another, wearing the breath of a new age.
She blinked at the buildings and streetscapes so different from her hometown, looking around curiously as she headed toward her relative's house.
At that moment, a loud mechanical sound suddenly reached her ears from behind. Turning around, she saw a single omnibus—a bus—driving down the street.
She stopped in her tracks in spite of herself.
She had never seen a bus in her hometown, as they had only recently begun running in the city. She followed the large vehicle with her eyes for a while as it swayed and drove away.
Eventually, as the bus passed, the other side of the street came into view.
Standing there was a student. A young man wearing a black school uniform.
Their eyes met. That was all.
She immediately turned forward and began walking as if nothing had happened.
He was a stranger. Nothing more, nothing less.
But—.
The young man was different. He could not move from that spot. He felt as though something had rung out loudly deep within his chest.
He didn't know why. No, perhaps he simply didn't want to know.
Her hair swaying in the wind, her cool profile—he had only seen them for a fleeting second.
Even so, he couldn't take his eyes off her.
Watching her back as she disappeared into the crowd, the young man stood there in a daze.
He didn't know her name.
He didn't know who she was or where she came from.
He might never be able to meet her again.
