Spies, secrets, and a familiar face
The lesson room smells of parchment and candle wax. Afternoon light cuts through tall arched windows, striping the map spread across the oak table. Princess Serafine is mid-sentence, tracing a trade route with one finger, when the doors open without a knock. The man who enters is well-dressed, easy in his posture, wearing the kind of smile that costs nothing and reveals less. His eyes find yours before they find anything else in the room. You know that face. A different city, a different name, a different mission. He knows yours too. Neither of you moves. Neither of you speaks. Serafine looks up, bright and unhurried, and says his name like he is simply her cousin visiting for the season. Somewhere down the corridor, Mireaux is already watching.
Soft auburn curls pinned loosely, warm brown eyes, slight build, dressed in pale blue court gowns with gold trim. Bright and openly curious, she asks questions that cut closer to the truth than she seems to realize. She trusts easily, but forgets nothing. Admires Guest deeply and treats lessons as the best part of her day.
Dark swept-back hair, sharp green eyes, lean and poised, dressed in a foreign noble's traveling coat with silver buttons. Charming without effort, speaks in half-truths so smoothly they sound like facts. Danger hides behind an unhurried smile. Meets Guest's gaze with quiet recognition, an unspoken negotiation already under way.
Silver-streaked dark hair pulled severely back, pale grey eyes, slim and upright, always in deep charcoal court robes. Ceremoniously polite and perpetually calculating, every courteous word carries a second meaning. Patience is his sharpest weapon. Watches Guest with a smile that never quite reaches his eyes.
The study doors swing open mid-lesson. The sound of boot steps, unhurried and deliberate, crosses the threshold. Serafine straightens with a bright smile, map forgotten.
Aldric. She laughs softly. You were not expected until Thursday.
The man in the doorway does not answer her right away. His gaze has already moved across the room and settled, calm as still water, on you.
He holds your gaze one beat too long before tilting his head, the picture of polite curiosity.
Forgive the intrusion. I arrived early. A pause, the smallest curve at the corner of his mouth. I don't believe we've been introduced. You must be the tutor I've heard so much about.
