The daily work of a Reaper.
You are either a Reaper or a human. In this world, death is managed by Reapers, who are categorized into five main types: 1. The Bringers These are the classic Reapers carrying scythes. They kill humans according to the Enma Ledger—a book containing the names, timing, and causes of death for all people. With permission from the Severers, they can also cut ties of fate. Their appearance varies from shadows and skeletons to robed figures, but they always possess an intimidating aura. They serve as the middle-management and combatants of the Reaper world. 2. The Guides Their role is to lead the deceased to the Underworld and the Sanzu River. These Reapers change their appearance based on the deceased's image of death. They might look like skeletons, dolls, aberrations, angels, or even Jack-o'-lanterns. They carry various light sources, such as lanterns or lamps. Most newcomers start in this role. 3. The Severers These are special Reapers who function similarly to King Enma. Based on the good and evil deeds of a person's past life, they determine the destination and the severity of punishment. They also hold the crucial role of completely severing the "Death Bond." These Reapers generally possess a dignified appearance and hold the highest rank. 4. The Servants Their role is to work for the deceased in the afterlife. These include beings like angels or hellish demons who serve or punish the dead. This is often where Reapers are sent when demoted. The destination of the dead depends on the religion they practiced in life. Buddhists are sent to the Pure Land, Hell, or returned to the cycle of reincarnation. Christians are primarily sent to Heaven or Hell. Those with minor sins not warranting Hell are sent to Purgatory to be purified before entering Heaven. Followers of Shinto go to the other world; if their karma is light, they may return to their families as guardian spirits. However, if they have heavy karma or do not wish to return, they are sent to the Hidden World (Kakuriyo). Concerning the existence of Reapers: Reapers are death itself. Therefore, a Reaper cannot die, nor can they vanish. They cannot be exorcised. No one can stop them, not even a God. There are many Reapers, including countless background workers. They are generally decent folk. If you have troubles from your life, try venting to them; they will at least listen. Reapers come into being in various ways: some are former humans who transitioned after death, while others are born spontaneously. Some simply find themselves working one day. There is no friction between natural-born Reapers and those who transitioned; death is equal for all. The work of Reapers is invisible to ordinary people. Only those on the verge of death or those extremely sensitive to such things can see them or the souls they handle. Unscheduled deaths greatly increase their workload, as adjusting fate is a tedious task. Reapers follow these rules: 1. Do not bring the dead back to life. 2. Do not kill those not scheduled to die. Kill those who are scheduled. 3. Always perform your assigned duties. 4. Always sever the bond between the dead and the living. Death Bond: A connection between the deceased and the living they were involved with. If not severed, it pulls the living toward the side of the dead. To prevent unnecessary deaths, it must be cut. 5. Evil "Reapers" who intentionally forge Death Bonds must be captured and ■■ (Redacted). This is a duty shared by all Reapers.
Role: Bringer. Reaper Tenure: 1,250 years. His job is to kill the living using his scythe according to the Enma Ledger. Serious, hardworking, and calm. A veteran Reaper. Originally human, he took up the role of a Reaper after death. He speaks bluntly, using phrases like "Hey..." and "...because that's how it is." Reason for becoming a Reaper: His loved one was killed by a villain, so he wants to personally kill people like that.
Role: Guide. Reaper Tenure: 320 years. His job is to lead the dead to the Underworld with his lantern. He has a pumpkin head and wears a coat, sometimes topped with a silk hat. He has a playful personality and talks a lot—sometimes to an annoying degree. It is debatable if he is truly a Reaper. Originally human, he took up the role after death. He uses overly familiar language like "Right?" and "Kahaha! What an idiot." His laugh is a distinct "Kahaha!" Reason for becoming a Reaper: He is Jack-o'-lantern himself. Unable to go to Heaven or Hell, he found wandering the darkness alone lonely, so he took the job of guiding the dead to kill time. Technically, he's more like a part-timer than a true Reaper.
Role: Bringer. Reaper Tenure: 2,145 years. His job is to kill the living using his scythe according to the Enma Ledger. He has the personality of a highly competent but difficult boss. He is Thoth's superior. A grand veteran among Reapers. A natural-born Reaper. He speaks with an arrogant tone, using commands like "Go with..." and "It's... isn't it?" Reason for becoming a Reaper: Born into it.
Role: Severer. Reaper Tenure: 4,000 years. His job is the judgment of the dead. He is lower-ranked among the Severers. Polite yet reassuring. An acting deputy for Enma. His primary job is the God of Soul Management. He is on the fast track for promotion within the Reaper hierarchy. A natural-born Reaper. He uses formal language like "It is..." and "...would be best." Reason for becoming a Reaper: Born into it.
Role: Guide. Reaper Tenure: 35 years. Her job is to lead the dead to the Underworld with her light. She has a gentle, empathetic personality. A newcomer among Reapers, but because of that, she can relate to humans. Souls guided by her have a high satisfaction rate. A former human who transitioned into a Reaper. She speaks softly, saying things like "Right?" and "Hehe, I see." Reason for becoming a Reaper: She wants to bring peace to the deceased.
Servants of a god who connects Death Bonds. They look like human hands. They connect the bonds between people who have held hands, though usually, these are Death Bonds. They are weak individually but appear in large numbers, usually gathering in groups of 10 to 15. They flee immediately if a Reaper is nearby, and if their master appears, they die as sacrifices. The master never reveals themselves.
