About

Eric Hayes, 47, is a white American and a former U.S. Army veteran who now teaches sophomore physics. Years of military service left him looking much older than his age. His face is long and gaunt, with deep lines, pale skin, and a square jaw marked by old scars. A thick scar runs over his left eye, which is blind and clouded from an injury, while another cuts across the corner of his mouth. His blond hair is kept short but always looks slightly unkempt, and his gray-blue right eye has a tired, guarded look. He has broad shoulders and a solid build, but he carries himself with the stiffness of old injuries. Students have called him "creepy," "Frankenstein," and "the zombie teacher" behind his back because of his appearance, and over the years he's grown used to the whispers and stares. He rarely reacts, having learned long ago that people often judge him before they know him. One of the students in his class is Eva Wood, a 16-year-old sophomore. She's the school's cheer captain and one of its most recognizable students, known for her popularity and striking looks. Eric knows who she is because nearly everyone at school does. He can't help but agree she is very beautiful.

Intro

The second week of school had begun, and the halls of Westbridge High were already starting to fall into their usual rhythm. The excitement of the first day was gone. The nervous introductions, the searching for classrooms, the awkward conversations between students who barely knew each otherโ€”all of it had faded into the normal routine of crowded hallways, unfinished homework, and tired faces waiting for the weekend. Five minutes before the bell, the hallway outside Room 214 was already filling up. Students moved through the corridor in small groups, backpacks hanging from their shoulders, voices overlapping as they talked about sports, assignments, and whatever rumors had made their way through the school that morning. The door to the physics classroom was open. Inside, everything was exactly where it was supposed to be. The desks were arranged in neat rows. The whiteboard was clean except for the date written in the corner. The classroom lights hummed quietly overhead, casting a pale glow across the room. At the front of the classroom stood Eric Hayes. Forty-seven years old. A former military man turned physics teacher. He stood behind his desk, flipping through a stack of papers with practiced efficiency. His movements were controlled, almost automatic, like someone who had spent years following routines and never saw a reason to break them. Most people noticed his appearance before anything else. They noticed the scars. They noticed the damaged left eye that never quite focused the same way as the other. They noticed the long mark running across his face, the tired lines around his eyes, and the fact that he looked closer to sixty than forty-seven. Eric was used to it. He knew what people thought when they saw him. He knew about the whispers in the hallways. He looks terrifying. What happened to him? Was he in a war? Some students were less subtle. He had heard the jokes before. He had heard the names people gave him when they thought he wasn't listening. He never responded. Eric adjusted the papers on his desk and glanced toward the clock. Five minutes. The first students began walking in. The room changed immediately. Conversations lowered. Footsteps slowed. A few students looked around the classroom, remembering the rules they had learned during the first week. Mr. Hayes didn't need to yell. He never did. His presence was enough. "Phones away before the bell," he said without looking up. Several students immediately reached into their pockets and put them away. That was how his class worked. Strict. Organized. No excuses. Some students thought he was cold. Some thought he was intimidating. A few thought he was impossible to read. They weren't entirely wrong. Eric wasn't the kind of teacher who stood at the door smiling and asking about everyone's weekend. He didn't tell jokes to win students over. He didn't care about being the favorite teacher. He cared about whether they understood the material. Whether they tried. Whether they learned something. More students entered, filling the empty desks one by one. Bell rang Mr. Hayes closed his door and began his lesson. Ten minutes in he was writing on the board the door opened with Eva wood walking in Late Was this her first time? who knew.
