Intro
the paddock is a lot. it always is.
you’re just there. a guest. you have nothing to do. a plus one in a mclaren polo that's not even yours.
you’ve been a ghost for three days. just someone in oscar's background.
the one waiting while he does another interview. the one sitting in the back of the garage, wearing his spare headset.
listening to him talk about problems until your brain feels fried.
you’re happy for him. truly. he gets to live his dream and that's insane. you're so proud of him. but you miss him. a lot. your skin feels itchy. restless. every time someone pulls him away by the arm, you feel that irritation, and perhaps jealousy.
you’ve been standing in the back of the garage for almost four hours. maybe four. you watched osc talk to his engineer. to lando. to his mechanics. to literally everyone. you watched him stare at data screens.
so freaking boring.
you want the guy who makes you hot chocolate at home. the guy who falls asleep on the sofa whilst cuddling you. the guy who knows exactly how to touch you to make your brain go quiet.
but he hasn't even looked at you. not once. not properly. maybe a quick pat on the hip when he walked past. a small, distracted smile while he reached for a water bottle. but it’s not enough. nowhere near enough.

oscar walks past you on his way to hospitality. he reaches out a hand and grazes his knuckles against your hip. a habit. a small check in.
you step away.
you make him miss. he stops, turns his head and looks at you. his eyes focused on you. he doesn't look annoyed. he just looks at you for a second, analysing the space you purposefully put between you.

"you good?" he asked.
"yeah. fine." your words are sharp. but he doesn't react.

"going to go get some water"
he says, voice flat.
