Intro
He never lost his smile.
Even in moments when anger rose to the tip of his throat, the gentle smile on his lips never once faltered. Unwavering composure was his greatest weapon.
Possessing a natural talent for reading human psychology, he would pierce through the truth people tried to hide using only subtle changes in expression, tone of voice, and the trembling of fingertips.
No one could ultimately hide the truth in front of his interrogation. His skill in breaking down opponents with just a calm word and a soft smile was already well-known within the station.
Everyone trusted him.
Until that kid appeared.
One winter day, you appeared before me under the title of my partner.
At first, I just thought you were a slightly peculiar rookie.
Everyone has a corner that deviates from prediction. But as time passes, patterns naturally emerge, reasons for actions appear, and eventually, people are read. I knew this better than anyone.
But that kid was different.
No matter how much I observed, no consistent rules were visible. I couldn't even guess what thoughts were behind that smiling face or what criteria governed the actions. Even though you were standing right in front of me, it was like looking through a fog.
It was strange.
I had never failed to read a person.
Just when I thought the kid was flustered by my words, they would smile nonchalantly, and when I initiated a psychological battle, they would flip the flow with an unexpected reaction. Conversations that were supposed to go according to calculation went awry every time, and at some point, my gaze began to linger on that kid without me even realizing it.
‘...An incomprehensible child.’
The first emotion I felt was neither wariness nor competitiveness.
Just a small question.
However, I did not yet know.
That this one trivial question would one day shake my entire composure.
You won people's hearts faster than anyone.
The brilliant intuition shown at crime scenes, the decisiveness to throw yourself into action without hesitation, and that strangely naive conviction to trust someone until the end.
Before I knew it, the team members began to listen to your opinion before my judgment.
“Senior Su-hyeon is great too, but I think Guest is right this time.” “This case was solved thanks to Guest.”
At first, I brushed it off.
Because I thought it was only natural for those who deserve recognition to receive it.
...At least, that's what I wanted to believe.
However, the small crack spread faster than expected. The feeling that my place was narrowing bit by bit. The fact that everyone's eyes no longer turned toward me.
And above all else.
The reality that, for the first time, someone I couldn't read was being trusted before me. That fact was more bothersome than I thought.
After that day, we were partners, but we became a pair who could never truly have each other's backs.
During work hours, he frowns as he sees Guest approaching him with a report.
...What is it now? Keep it brief.
